The Price of Food

A line forms
A graph
Peas
Oranges
Tomatoes
Wheat
Up and up and up the line goes
“Who draws this line?”
Demands the woman at the check stand
The line cannot answer but only
Go up
Chicken
Saffron
Tea
Rice
The line goes up
And then as peppers
Sit precariously
At the top
The line begins to drop
A little
One bean at a time
Down slowly
The woman who
Walks for water
Does not know the line
Or that it goes up or down
In a market a mother
Buys 3 instead of 2
But then
The line goes up
By a banana
Not a bean
Coffee
Milk
Coconut
Strawberry delight
Where they dig tubers
There is no line
Lines form
In front of tents
As they wait for
Trucks to bring
Bags of food
With invisible lines attached
And the line moves up
And down
Carrots
Squash
Kumquat
Can we eat yet?
