Whirlpool

An ocean of prairie grass
Bound by mountains, deserts
Dotted with concrete nests filled
With immigrants

In the ocean grass
Swirling invisibly
A whirlpool waits
Pulling silently

Sucking away children
From their beds
Parents
Out of their heads

women dragged from
the street
running errands vanish
without missing a beat

the whirlpool sucks them
funnels them to dark depths
no trace no bones
away and away souls are swept

No one can see it
No one knows where it flows
No one hears it roar
No one knows where it goes

Some run away
From horrors so great
Looking for relief
Finding a dark invisible fate

Grief in all the nation
Across the great grass ocean
While swirling underneath
The whirlpool pulls with no emotion
