We Fought

The monsters are at the gate
I must keep them out
I had a great army
We fought them in the swamps
Where water began
And blood began
There was no end
They fell;
We mourned our losses
Then we moved on
We fought them in the dessert
In the heat
On the dunes
Sand scoured away
Memories of water
They fell,
But were not washed away
As sun set
We mourned our losses
We moved on
The fight in the forest
Was fierce
With cities in the near field
We fought harder
We were fewer
The trees were falling
Butterflies of fire floated
Down down down
We fell and fell
I mourned the dead

Then

I am at the gate
The monsters are at the gate
I cannot let them in
